Wine consumption is sliding in the UK, dipping in France, and the newer generation is reaching for alcohol-free alternatives — so Karen Green went looking for no/low wine in the middle of French wine country. She checked four different retailers. Exactly one carried it. As someone who works with the Quality Food and Drink Awards, she was in the room when the drinks category needed a name for the trend, and the answer was apparently obvious to everyone but her: "no-low."
In part two of our conversation, Karen takes us inside the moment every wine lover knows — standing at the fixture, staring down 400 bottles, leaving with one. She maps what the trade calls the buyer's journey: whether you arrived because it's Saturday night, because the day went sideways, or because there's a dinner party to impress, that starting point shapes everything that follows. Along the way she explains why nobody buys the cheapest bottle on the shelf (we go two prices down instead), how France organizes wine by domaine while the UK sells by grape, and why a pretty label wins parties more often than anyone admits. She also shares her honest read on how men and women buy differently — we all think we buy logically, she says, but we buy emotionally — and reveals the presentation trick involving kittens that gets audiences in a buying mood before the salient point ever lands. The full pour, no fluff.
